In the wake of the highly publicized breakup between Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, former MLB star Alex Rodriguez has seemingly added his voice to the conversation, albeit in a subtle way.
The 49-year-old retired New York Yankee shared a cryptic message on his Instagram Story on the same day that Lopez, his ex-fiancée, filed for divorce from Affleck.
Rodriguez’s post featured one of his own quotes, stating, “You either go one way or the other, you might as well be the one deciding the direction.”

This message, while open to interpretation, has led many to speculate that it may be a veiled commentary on Lopez’s decision to end her marriage with Affleck.
Rodriguez and Lopez’s relationship was a high-profile romance that captured the attention of fans and media alike.
The pair began dating in 2017 and quickly became one of Hollywood’s most talked-about couples.
Their engagement in March 2019, marked by a romantic proposal in the Bahamas, only solidified their status as a power couple. “We’re really happy,” Lopez said in an interview with People at the time.
Rodriguez echoed her sentiment, adding, “We have [an] appreciation for where we are in our lives today, and that’s what we’re enjoying the most.”
However, despite the public displays of affection and shared optimism, their relationship came to an abrupt end in March 2021.
Rumors of a split circulated in the media, and by April 2021, the couple released a joint statement confirming their breakup. “We have realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so,” the statement read.
“We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects. We wish the best for each other and each other’s children.”
Since their breakup, Rodriguez has kept a relatively low profile regarding his past relationship with Lopez, choosing to focus on his personal life and his two daughters, Natasha, 19, and Ella, 16, whom he shares with ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis.
In August 2021, he reflected on his time with Lopez, describing their five-year relationship as “incredible.” “I had five years of an incredible life and partnership and also with my daughters,” he told Entertainment Tonight.

In the years following his split from Lopez, Rodriguez found love again with fitness guru Jaclyn Cordeiro, with whom he has been in a relationship since 2022.

Their reunion led to a second engagement in April 2022, followed by a Las Vegas wedding in July of the same year, and a more elaborate ceremony at Affleck’s Georgia estate in August 2022.
Lopez’s renewed relationship with Affleck seemed destined for a fairytale ending.
In a November 2022 interview with Zane Lowe of Apple Music, Lopez spoke with certainty about their future together.
“Now, we know. And there [are] no questions and there is no kind of like, ‘Well, let’s see how this goes,’” she said. “Like, ‘Nope, it’s me and you. That’s it. All the way, till the end. That’s it. It’s going to be us.’”
However, the reality proved to be different. On the exact second anniversary of their Georgia wedding, Lopez filed for divorce, citing April 26, 2024, as their official date of separation.
Reports suggest that Affleck had little interest in salvaging their marriage, which led to Lopez’s heart-wrenching decision.
“She’s very disappointed and sad,” a source told People. “She tried really hard to make things work and is heartbroken.”
The absence of a prenup between Lopez and Affleck has further complicated the situation, particularly given their combined five children. As the dust settles, Rodriguez’s cryptic post serves as a reminder that in relationships, as in life, one must ultimately choose their path forward.
Whether or not his message was directed at Lopez, it resonates with the complex emotions that accompany the end of a significant chapter in one’s life.
