Ellen DeGeneres, the beloved but sometimes controversial talk show host and comedian, made headlines last November when she packed up her life in Montecito, California, and fled across the Atlantic with her wife, Portia de Rossi.

The pair left behind the glitz and glamour of Hollywood for the quiet countryside of the United Kingdom, settling into an $18 million estate in the idyllic Cotswolds.

At the time, the move seemed like a fresh start—a retreat from the spotlight after years of media scrutiny and a chance to embrace a quieter, simpler life.

But several months into their new British chapter, DeGeneres is admitting that not everything has gone quite according to plan.

A Rocky Start to Farm Life

DeGeneres, now 67, and de Rossi, 52, have discovered that country living in a foreign land comes with unexpected challenges. On Tuesday, Ellen took to Instagram to share a glimpse of their less-than-idyllic experience.

She posted footage from their sprawling estate, which featured the couple doing yard work that, ironically, their newly acquired sheep were supposed to handle.

“Sheep are supposed to eat the grass so you don’t have to mow. Our sheep didn’t get the memo,” DeGeneres wrote, captioning a video that showed the animals lazing around as she and Portia toiled away with a lawnmower.

Clearly, this was not what the comedian envisioned when she decided to buy sheep to help maintain the massive property. Rather than grazing diligently, the animals appeared to have taken on the same leisurely pace DeGeneres may have been hoping to adopt herself.

From Glamorous to Grass-Cutting

This isn’t the first time DeGeneres has shared her ongoing struggle with English country maintenance. Just a month ago, she posted another Instagram clip of herself grappling with a ride-on mower in thick, overgrown grass.

“Portia thought it would be fun to film my first time on the mower. She was right,” Ellen wrote. The light-hearted video opened with the caption “How it started,” showing a confident DeGeneres climbing onto the mower.

But confidence soon turned to frustration as the terrain proved too much, ending with “How it ended” as a man appeared to push the stuck machine for her.

The video also revealed a new look for the comedian—gone was her signature blonde bob, replaced with a brunette hairstyle that added an extra touch of surprise for longtime fans.

The Sheep Solution… or Not

In late May, DeGeneres tried a different approach to managing her new land: replacing her unreliable mowing skills with livestock. She proudly shared a clip of herself feeding the newly acquired sheep, writing, “Turns out my lawn mowing skills are not great. So…..sheep.”

However, it didn’t take long for that plan to go awry too. Just days later, she posted yet another video—this one showing the sheep attempting to make a break for it.

“We got sheep to maintain the grass, but they keep escaping. I’m not sure if this is easier than using the lawnmower,” DeGeneres admitted.

Fans Weigh In

As always, fans were quick to respond to the candid updates, offering humor and encouragement.

“This is hilarious, only you, Ellen would buy sheep that wanted to lounge at your castle instead of eating your grass,” one follower commented.

Another joked, “Not understanding the assignment sheepies!!! Maybe they are cuddle sheep?”

A third chimed in with a classic pun: “Perhaps they felt sheepish about getting in trouble.”

While the fan reactions were largely good-natured, it’s clear that Ellen’s dream of peaceful pastoral living has come with its share of unexpected trials.

Whether it’s wrangling livestock or navigating machinery through unkempt fields, life on a British farm has proven to be far more involved than the daytime talk show host had anticipated.

A Cautionary Tale?

Ellen and Portia’s journey from Montecito to the Cotswolds serves as a reminder that even multimillion-dollar moves to stunning international estates aren’t without complications.

As DeGeneres continues to share her rural escapades with her followers, fans can only hope that she and de Rossi find their rhythm—or at least figure out how to convince the sheep to do their job.

Until then, it appears the grass isn’t always greener, even when you’ve paid millions for the view.
