R&B artist R. Kelly has requested a release from federal prison to house arrest, citing threats to his life allegedly orchestrated by fellow inmates and Bureau of Prisons (BOP) officials, as reported by The New York Post.
His legal team submitted an emergency motion Tuesday seeking temporary furlough, claiming there is an ongoing conspiracy to have him killed while in custody.
Kelly, whose legal name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, is currently serving a 31-year prison sentence for child sexual abuse crimes.

The request was filed in federal court and is based on a sworn declaration by fellow inmate Mikeal Glenn Stine, who alleged that senior prison staff members attempted to orchestrate the singer’s murder by leveraging the influence of a known prison gang.
According to Stine’s declaration, three high-ranking BOP officials approached him while he was incarcerated at United States Penitentiary Tucson in Arizona.
Stine, a member of the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang, claimed that his position gave him authority to order violent acts, including beatings and killings, carried out by other gang members.
Stine alleged that he was placed in the same unit as Kelly and was instructed by a BOP official to carry out the murder.
He claimed he was told, “You need to do what you came here for,” and that he would be permitted to escape custody if the plan succeeded, allowing him to spend his remaining days as a free man. Stine said the offer was especially appealing due to his terminal cancer diagnosis.
Ultimately, Stine said he decided against following through with the plan and informed Kelly about the plot. He has since offered to take a polygraph test and name inmates involved in similar assaults as further proof of his claims.
Attorney Beau Brindley, representing Kelly, held a press conference Tuesday, stating, “We are seeking the immediate release of R. Kelly, based on the solicitation of his murder by high-ranking BOP officers and officials.”
He added:
“These are people who seek to kill Mr. Kelly, rather than allow the corrupt criminal conduct of those who manufactured his convictions be exposed.”
Brindley emphasized that the allegations come not from Kelly or his legal team, but from an inmate who claims to have firsthand knowledge of the conspiracy. Brindley said he intends to contact President Donald Trump for assistance.
In a written statement, Brindley further argued, “Mr. Kelly’s continued incarceration while he knows his life is in jeopardy constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.” He added that “drastic relief is warranted.”
Kelly, 58, has been held in federal custody since his 2019 arrest on charges of racketeering and sex trafficking. In 2021, he was convicted by a federal jury and sentenced to 30 years in prison.
The following year, he was convicted on six additional counts in a separate Chicago trial, including child porn charges, receiving another 20-year sentence, with 19 years running concurrently with his existing term.
