Actor Robert De Niro said three times during Monday’s edition of “The Best People with Nicolle Wallace” that it was necessary to “get rid of” President Donald Trump, remarks that came one day after U.S. Secret Service agents shot and killed a man attempting to force his way into Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.

The podcast episode was released following the Sunday incident at Mar-a-Lago. Authorities said Secret Service agents confronted and fatally shot a man who was trying to breach the secure perimeter of the president’s property. The shooting occurred months after two separate assassination attempts during the 2024 presidential campaign.

During the podcast, De Niro criticized the president and questioned whether he would leave office voluntarily.

“He won’t leave. Let’s not kid ourselves,” De Niro said.

“He will not leave. It’s up to us to get rid of him.”

Approximately one minute later, the actor repeated the phrase while intensifying his criticism.

“He’s an idiot. We got to get rid of him,” he said. “He’s gonna ruin the country — everything that this country has worked for, represents. He is ruining it, and it’s right before your eyes.”

Minutes after that, De Niro again called for the president’s removal.

“It’s time for us who’ve taken this country for granted to stand up and get rid of this guy,” De Niro also said.

Near the end of the episode, De Niro became emotional and cried while discussing the president.

The Sunday shooting at Mar-a-Lago occurred in the context of heightened security concerns following two assassination attempts against Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign.

On July 13, 2024, Trump was shot in his right ear during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

One week later, his former physician and Republican Texas Rep. Ronny Jackson provided a medical update stating that the bullet came “less than a quarter of an inch from entering his head.”

A second attempt was thwarted on Sept. 15, 2024, when a Secret Service agent discovered Ryan Wesley Routh hiding in bushes with a rifle while Trump was golfing at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Authorities intervened before any shots were fired in that incident.

Following Sunday’s shooting at Mar-a-Lago, the president’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, addressed political rhetoric during an appearance on “Fox & Friends” on Monday.

“[W]henever you just casually throw around terms like Nazi, like fascist, like Hitler, and racist, what do you think the consequences of that ultimately will be? We are better than this as a country,” she said. “And I’ll tell you as a family member, I keep wondering how many chances does one man get? He’s not gonna be lucky enough at some point. Thank God he wasn’t at Mar-a-Lago and the first lady wasn’t there this weekend. But you don’t get lucky every single time.”

De Niro also claimed during the podcast that “Trump is the enemy of this country” and said the president would refuse to ever leave the White House.

The comments drew attention due to their timing, coming less than 24 hours after the fatal shooting outside Mar-a-Lago and in the wake of previous attempts on the president’s life during the 2024 campaign.
