After more than four decades together, Goldie Hawn says the key to her lasting bond with Kurt Russell is the sense of “freedom” that still exists between them.

The legendary actress opened up about finding happiness, embracing change, and maintaining connection in the long-term relationship that has defined much of her life.

In a recent interview, Hawn described how her outlook on life continues to evolve.

“My life’s mission is to be happy. My life’s mission is to be an example for my children and my family,” she told People.

At 80, Hawn reflected on aging and the importance of mindset. “As you get older, things can get harder. Your state of mind matters. How you look at life matters, how you value moments in your life matters, because you’re feeding your own brain. So, I say, ‘Right now, everything is amazing.’”

She added that her partnership with Russell continues to thrive because it allows both of them to feel unconfined.

“When I say freedom, it means liberation. I don’t feel penned in,” she shared, adding that she and Russell are “the right match.”

Although they don’t always see eye to eye, Hawn believes their differences have enriched their relationship.

“We don’t always agree on stuff, which is fine. We’re both very spontaneous. [Our relationship] fed on a lot of goodness, a lot of wonderful life together.”

Hawn and Russell’s family remains a central source of joy. Hawn has two children, Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson, from her marriage to Bill Hudson, while Russell shares son Boston Russell with his ex-wife, Season Hubley. Together, Hawn and Russell share a son, Wyatt Russell.

Their family bond extends beyond simple connection. In 2024, during an appearance on SiriusXM’s “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend,” Hawn credited family as the “sticking glue” that keeps her and Russell close. “We don’t agree on everything. His politics are different than mine,” she admitted. “You know, there’s all these things that could divide you. But the one thing that we have, the greatest thing in God’s world, is our family.”

Hawn emphasized that this shared focus gives them deep joy. “That is where we thrive and where we have incredible amounts of joy and really focus on that,” she said.

Her admiration for Russell often centers on his approach to fatherhood. “He is a family man,” she explained.

“I can’t explain it, but he was the one for me. It wasn’t just because he was sexy and handsome and all of those things you get turned on by; it was because he matched my devotion to children to be No. 1. The seduction was really his personality and his focus on the children.”

Their daughter, Kate Hudson, echoed similar feelings when discussing her parents’ relationship on SiriusXM’s “The Howard Stern Show.” “They’ve been together 40 plus years. They are the center of our family,” she said.

Hudson described how the family’s dynamic reflects passion and joy.

“I think from the outside it looks a certain way, but inside, our family is just nuts, in the best way. Everybody’s so different, but everyone wants to enjoy their life. There’s a lot of joie de vivre,” she continued.

She added that even moments of disagreement stem from that same energy. “Even in, like, debate or when people are upset with each other, it’s like we’ve got this life force in our family, and it’s so great.”

For Hawn, this stage of life also marks a new creative chapter.

She is preparing to release her first children’s book, “The After-School Kindness Crew: Pooch on the Loose,” co-written with Lin Oliver.

Discussing this next adventure, Hawn said she embraces change as part of her personal evolution.

“I think, ultimately, every life has to have its sections … Doing the same thing over and over again for your whole life is not as interesting to me,” she told People.

She added that her decision to explore new paths came with age and reflection.

“And I decided at probably 55 or something … ‘What are you going to do for this next part of your life?’ And I knew that there was more out there to learn and to do.”

After more than forty years with Russell, Hawn continues to find balance between partnership and independence — a combination she credits for their unmatched connection.
