A family’s beach vacation took an eerie twist when they checked into their Airbnb rental in San Diego, California, and spotted a familiar set of faces staring back at them from a photograph on the wall, their own, as reported by Fox News.
TikTok user Aubrey Birrell posted a video on July 2 documenting the unexpected discovery.
In the clip, she zooms in on a large beach canvas hanging in the hallway of the rental and points out tiny figures in the water, she said, who were her father, sister, and brother.
“We’re looking at this picture, and my dad is like, ‘This looks like me,’” Birrell recalled in the video.

The realization set off a wave of disbelief as the family recognized the image as one taken a decade earlier.
“I’m like, ‘Dad, what? No, this is my dad. That’s my sister, Libby, from 10 years ago, and that’s Brady, my brother, 10 years ago,’” she said. “They’re literally in the Airbnb.”
Her sister Libby appeared in the video and admitted to feeling both disturbed and amused by what they saw.
“It’s unsettling — random Airbnb,” she said. “We are literally in this picture. We are on our Airbnb wall.”

The family even remembered the swimsuits they were wearing that day, making the coincidence harder to ignore. “We have those swimsuits,” Libby added.
Birrell’s TikTok quickly went viral, prompting thousands of comments from viewers who were both fascinated and creeped out by the discovery.
Some compared the situation to the opening scene of a horror movie.
“Literally sounds like the start of a horror movie,” one commenter wrote.
Another joked, “Proof we live in a simulation.”
Others chimed in with similar experiences of stumbling across themselves or relatives in unexpected photos.
“My uncle got a postcard from Mackinac Island, and my grandfather was randomly in the photo eating an ice cream cone,” one user said. “He had passed away years earlier.”
Another viewer shared, “I once checked into a hotel at the beach in the middle of a thunderstorm. I grabbed a newspaper to hold over my head. When I got to the room, I looked at the paper, and there was a pic of my mom and me on the front page from a festival three years before.”
The uncanny coincidence has fueled lighthearted speculation and humor across social media, as commenters weighed in on the odds of such a moment happening.
“What are the odds of you looking that closely at the picture?” one person wondered.
Birrell’s video showed both sisters laughing in disbelief as they pointed at the photograph hanging only a few feet away from them.
The frame capturing a distant beach scene had suddenly become a personal time capsule without their knowledge.
Fox News Digital reached out to Birrell and Airbnb for comment regarding the discovery. As of publication, no responses had been shared publicly.
The viral moment continues to draw wide attention online, with viewers adopting the incident as a bizarre symbol of just how small the world can be or perhaps how uncanny coincidences tend to find their way into vacation stories.
