A top New Jersey Democrat has submitted his resignation following allegations of harassment and sexual misconduct. Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell leaves office after Gov. Mikie Sherrill demanded that he depart by Friday.

Sherrill made clear that Caldwell had to go, publicly presenting the decision as an exercise in accountability.

Her response left no room for Caldwell to remain in office once the investigation’s findings became public.

“The investigation found that he failed to uphold the responsibilities of his office and demonstrated a pattern of behavior that does not meet the standards of this Administration,” Sherrill said.

Those are lofty words from Sherrill, who has faced conservative criticism over her own policies and political conduct.

She previously bragged about refusing illegal alien voter data to the Trump administration, according to the account, while leading a state described as a sanctuary for illegal aliens.

The accusations against Caldwell extend beyond unwanted romantic attention.

He allegedly complained that a young woman who rejected his advances wanted “young sperm,” a remark that hardly fits the standards Sherrill now says her administration expects.

The investigation also examined Caldwell’s conduct involving people he brought to events.

He repeatedly allowed individuals to attend without the required payment or ethics clearance, according to the allegations detailed in the account.

That conduct reportedly continued even after Caldwell received notification about an ethics complaint.

Rather than changing course once the complaint placed his conduct under scrutiny, he allegedly brought more individuals into events without satisfying the required conditions.

Caldwell also used a state email account to promote one of his girlfriends, the account states.

He allegedly did so without acknowledging that the two shared a romantic relationship, creating another ethics problem beyond the harassment and sexual misconduct allegations.

Taken together, the accusations described a pattern rather than an isolated lapse.

Sherrill’s own statement emphasized that conclusion, saying the investigation found repeated behavior that failed to meet the standards of her administration.

The governor’s language was sweeping, insisting that public officials must face the highest standards regardless of title.

Caldwell’s title, once a sign of his standing in New Jersey Democratic politics, offered no shelter once Sherrill demanded his resignation.
