Sebastian Stan and Chris Evans are preparing to share the Marvel spotlight again, 15 years after they first appeared together in Captain America: The First Avenger.
Their reunion will arrive in Avengers: Doomsday, which opens in theaters this December, as reported by Decider.
Stan first played Bucky Barnes opposite Evans as Steve Rogers, Bucky’s best friend.

Six Marvel films and one bionic arm later, both actors are once again reprising their familiar characters for the upcoming Avengers installment.

While promoting his new film Fjord, Stan recently spoke with Decider about returning to the Marvel fold. The conversation included a question about whether filming Avengers: Doomsday gave him an opportunity to reunite with Evans.
“I got a chance to reunite with everyone,” Stan said. His response made clear that returning to these characters also meant looking back on years of shared experiences with the wider cast.
“It was very nostalgic to look back, and think about all of these years that we’ve known each other, and grew up together. It’s incredible in that way. It’s been a family and it never stops being that way.”
The reunion carries particular significance because Stan and Evans began their Marvel screen partnership 15 years ago. For Stan, the connection among the performers has retained the feeling of a family throughout that long stretch of time.

However, Stan could not offer a clear answer about how much of Bucky viewers will see in Avengers: Doomsday. He said he has not watched the completed movie and does not know how the final version turned out.
“I haven’t seen the movie, and I don’t know how it turned out,” Stan said. That uncertainty extended to the fate of the characters as the film prepares to bring its large collection of returning faces back to theaters.
Sebastian Stan on what Bucky fans can expect from ‘Avengers: Doomsday’:
“I haven’t seen the movie, and I don’t know how it turned out. I’m sure it’s going to be probably heartbreaking, in a lot of ways. We’ll see who makes it to the next level.” https://t.co/QPuwdktJan — Sebastian Stan Archive (@sebstanarchive) October 7, 2026
Stan nevertheless suggested that audiences may want to prepare themselves emotionally. “I’m sure it’s going to be probably heartbreaking, in a lot of ways. We’ll see who makes it to the next level.”
The possibility of heartbreak will not sound entirely new to Marvel fans. Avengers: Doomsday has been rumored to feature at least one major character death, and possibly more than one, although Stan offered no specific details about what happens.
Stan’s latest movie, Fjord, does not give him a particularly cheerful alternative to the possible heartbreak of Avengers: Doomsday. The critically acclaimed film opens in select U.S. theaters on October 9, 2026.
Fjord was written and directed by Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu. He is best known for the critically acclaimed 2007 film 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.
For Fjord, Mungiu drew inspiration from the true story of a Romanian family living in Norway. The family’s four children and infant baby were taken away by the country’s child protection services after the parents admitted to spanking their children.
Stan plays Mihai Gheorghiu, a religious Romanian man who moves his family to Norway. The character’s name was changed from Marius Bodnariu, the name identified in connection with the true story that inspired the film.
Mihai’s wife, Lisbet, is from Norway and is played by Renate Reinsve. Fjord reunites Reinsve with Stan after they appeared together in the 2024 film A Different Man.
The two projects place Stan in distinctly different settings, from the intimate family crisis of Fjord to the enormous ensemble of Avengers: Doomsday. His comments about Evans, however, focused less on spectacle and more on the enduring relationships formed across their years together.
For Marvel fans, Stan’s remarks offer both warmth and warning. His reunion with Evans brought back memories of a cast that became a family, but his tease about possible heartbreak leaves Bucky’s future far less certain.
