New York GOP gubernatorial nominee Bruce Blakeman lashed out at Harry Styles after the singer honored Oscar Belgal during a Madison Square Garden concert.

Blakeman branded Styles an “out-of-touch” elitist and challenged him to bring Belgal aboard his tour bus, as reported by Fox News.

Belgal, a 28-year-old migrant from the Dominican Republic, was shot Thursday during a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation. His son, 5, was in the back seat of the car at the time.

Styles is performing a 30-night residency at Madison Square Garden. During his show, he paused to recognize Belgal and urged the audience to care for one another.

“I just want us to take a moment to think about Oscar Belgal tonight, and I want us to just think and remember to just look after each other,” Styles said.

Blakeman sharply rejected the tribute during a Tuesday appearance on “Fox & Friends.” He argued that illegal immigrants with criminal records should be removed from communities rather than defended by celebrities.

“I think Harry Styles should put that guy on his tour bus and tour around the country with this guy, who is a convicted criminal,” Blakeman said. “He is alleged to have gang activity. He’s alleged to be involved in drug-dealing poison to our children.”

Belgal was shot after allegedly refusing to comply with officers carrying out a targeted arrest operation. Senior ICE official Marcos Charles defended the officers at a Friday news conference and explained what officials said led them to fire.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Belgal has previous arrests for assault, robbery, drug possession and weapons possession. Federal officials also alleged that he has ties to the Trinitarios street gang.

Blakeman questioned why Styles would speak for Belgal instead of supporting the federal officers involved. “This is who [Styles] wants in our communities? This is who he sticks up for, rather than federal agents who just want to do their job?” he asked.

The gubernatorial nominee also described Styles’ position as disconnected from the risks facing New York communities. “It’s elitist, it’s out-of-touch and quite frankly, it’s wrong,” he told Fox News. “We have to get these illegal migrants with criminal records out of our communities.”

Blakeman, who is in the closing weeks of his campaign for New York governor, argued that celebrities are shielded from the consequences of the immigration policies they appear to favor. He claimed other communities would bear those consequences instead.

“Harry Styles and elitists like him, they know that these criminals aren’t going to move into their neighborhoods,” Blakeman said.

“They’re going to move into neighborhoods with Hispanic and Latino populations, Asian-American populations, African-American and Caribbean populations, and hurt those communities and try and get those kids into their drug gangs.”

A DHS spokesperson also attacked Styles over the tribute in a statement to Fox News Digital. “Imagine taking law enforcement advice from a man who dresses in women’s clothes while hiding behind armed private security,” the spokesperson said.

Fox News Digital reached out to Styles for comment. The source did not include a response from the singer.

The clash unfolded as New York leaders, including Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, continued opposing the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts.

According to DHS, New York has declined to honor more than 16,000 ICE detainers since January 2025.

Mamdani has called ICE “rotten to its core.” Blakeman also criticized Hochul as “out-of-touch” and accused her immigration agenda of endangering New Yorkers.

Belgal is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, reportedly with a bullet lodged in his neck. His legal team said he is enduring “deplorable conditions” inside the facility as the political and celebrity dispute over his shooting continues.
