Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez offered a bewildering defense of allowing males who identify as female to compete in women’s sports, eventually declaring that her support for trans women comes from being a “girls girl.” The New York Democrat’s reasoning drew applause at the event, but logic was apparently not required for admission.
Ocasio-Cortez made the remarks while appearing with Maine Senate candidate Troy Jackson at More Perfect University. The progressive campus program was launched in April 2026 by the advocacy media nonprofit More Perfect Union to combat Turning Point USA.
A male student who identifies as female told Ocasio-Cortez about feeling “abandoned” by the Democrat Party. The student said liberals appeared to view people who identify as transgender as a “losing issue” and believe “it's not worth defending us.”
Ocasio-Cortez responded with a lengthy answer before making a sweeping claim about the rights of transgender Americans. “What's so important for everyone to understand is that the moment you try to compromise the rights of a trans person in America, you compromise the rights of everyone citizen in America.”
Trans voter to @AOC: Trans people in America feel like they've been abandoned by the Democratic Party, that we are a losing issue, that it's not worth defending us. What do you say to that?

That argument attempts to transform opposition to males entering women’s sports and private spaces into an attack on every American’s rights. Under this logic, protecting women’s trophies, opportunities, locker rooms and athletic competition somehow becomes a threat to the entire country.
The statement received broad applause from the auditorium. Ocasio-Cortez then criticized conservatives for focusing on transgender issues and suggested they fail to understand the national conversation surrounding gender.
“Our basic rights shouldn't have to matter. [Rights] don't matter who you are, what you do. You have those rights guaranteed by being an American citizen. Point blank. Period,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
But she did not identify a constitutional provision establishing a right for males to participate in women’s sports or enter women’s restrooms and locker rooms based on gender identity. Individual rights come from God and that government exists to protect them.

Ocasio-Cortez next addressed the size of the transgender population and Republican attention to the issue. “The billions of dollars and the enormous amount of energy that The Right is putting and focusing on trans Americans, when you actually zoom out, trans Americans are about 1% of the population, perhaps less than 1%.”
The student responded by raising three fingers, indicating a belief that transgender identifying Americans represent 3% of the population. Ocasio-Cortez also claimed surveys showed Republicans exposed to political advertising about transgender issues began believing that group represented 40% of the population.
“When they (The Right) want to focus on trans girls in sports, it's not just about trans girls in sports. It's about girls, all girls,” she said. Ocasio-Cortez then accused the Right of “ attacking Title IX.”
“Title IX is the federal protection for all gender equality and all women to be protected,” Ocasio-Cortez claimed. The criticism of her position is that Title IX should protect biological sex as understood when the law was adopted in 1972, rather than include gender identity and sexual orientation.
Democrats, particularly under former President Biden, sought to broaden Title IX language in a way that could allow males into women’s sports. Republicans, by contrast, were presented as defending protections based on biological sex.
Ocasio-Cortez also connected Republican policies on transgender athletes with women’s ability to confront sexual violence. “Understand, when they attack trans girls in sports, they're also attacking all women's ability to stand up against their abusers, their rapists, and their assaulters on campuses across America.”
That comparison is the core problem with her argument. Excluding males from women’s athletic categories is not equivalent to rape, abuse or assault, and treating those subjects as interchangeable diminishes the real crimes committed against women.
Ocasio-Cortez eventually delivered the line that crystallized the entire performance. “I support the rights of trans women because I'm a girls girl.”

She closed by saying, “What we're not going to do is shred our Constitution, kill Title IX, and defund all of our healthcare, just to attack 3% of the U.S. population.” That statement is another attempt to portray restrictions based on biological sex as an assault on constitutional rights.
The debate is hardly theoretical for girls who have faced male competitors. A Camas High School cross country runner in Washington switched to the girls team during the season, prompting girls to walk off the course in protest.
Washington’s Initiative 638 is scheduled for a November ballot vote and would restrict K-12 public school athletic categories according to biological sex at birth. Those girls and their parents may be less impressed by Ocasio-Cortez’s applause lines than the friendly auditorium was.
