A family friend claims Rep. Ilhan Omar’s first husband was embarrassed and disgusted when Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, whom Omar has long been accused of marrying for immigration purposes despite allegedly being her brother, moved into their Minnesota home.

Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, had two young children with Ahmed Hirsi when she suddenly split from him in 2009. She then legally married Elmi, described by the source as an “extremely feminine Somali guy from London.”

Omar and Hirsi had participated in an Islamic marriage ceremony in 2002, but that union was not recognized by the state. The family friend claimed Omar and Hirsi remained together while Elmi moved into the home, creating serious strain between them.

“The whole community was gossiping about [Elmi] when he first arrived,” the anonymous source told The Post. Elmi allegedly attracted attention by wearing tight clothing, short shorts and cowboy boots.

“He told me that it was his wife’s brother from London and that Ilhan had ‘embarrassed all of us by bringing him here’. Ahmed used very strong words and said it was ‘disgusting.’”

The source described Hirsi as a popular figure at the center of Minnesota’s Somali community. According to the friend, Hirsi was highly sociable, widely connected, and known by the nickname South Side.

“All of the Somalis in Minneapolis were gossiping and trying to find out who this guy was,” the source said. “Then everyone realized it was Nur Said Elmi’s son, and Ilhan’s brother. Everybody was shocked.”

The friend repeated allegations that have followed Omar for years, claiming Hirsi said Omar legally married Elmi to obtain immigration papers for him. The source also claimed Hirsi regarded his Islamic marriage to Omar as their actual marital union.

“He explained that she had married him legally to get him papers and that he was only Islamically married to her,” the source said. The friend further claimed Hirsi called Elmi “pure trash” and complained that Omar had brought him to Minnesota.

According to the source, Elmi was shunned by parts of the local Somali community. The friend claimed people avoided being seen with him because they feared others would judge them differently.

Hirsi allegedly did not want Elmi near his children, Isra Hirsi, now 23, and Adnan, 20. Omar and Hirsi’s third child, Ilwad, was born in 2012 while Omar remained legally married to Elmi.

“He told me, ‘He’s an uncle to my children, and I am scared he is going to influence them with his effeminate lifestyle.’”

The friend alleged that Elmi became the primary source of conflict between Omar and Hirsi. “Ahmed and Ilhan used to argue over her brother all the time,” he told The Post. “I saw them arguing and shouting in public.”

Elmi left Minnesota around 2012, according to the source, who claimed Hirsi expressed relief afterward. “Ahmed praised God for taking him away from his family,” the source said.

Omar has faced allegations since 2016 that she fraudulently married Elmi, her alleged brother, for immigration purposes. The congresswoman, who arrived in the United States as a refugee from Somalia in 1995, has vehemently denied those claims.

Omar said she and Hirsi separated in 2008 before reconciling around four years later and legally marrying in 2018. She was legally married to Elmi from 2009 until 2017 and claims they separated in 2011, although completing the paperwork took several years.

On their marriage application, Omar and Elmi listed the same marital address in Columbia Heights, a Minneapolis suburb. Hirsi also used that address for a business license, while joint tax filings by Omar and Hirsi in 2014 and 2015 were later corrected.

Omar and Hirsi split in 2019, and she is now married to former political advisor Tim Mynett. After spending time in South Africa, Elmi returned to the United Kingdom, works at the University of Bristol, and has described himself as a “dirty dandy” on social media.
