Russell Brand is confronting a grim existence inside one of London’s most troubled prisons. The 51 year old “Get Him to the Greek” actor is being held at HMP Wandsworth following his conviction for rape and three counts of sexual assault.

The Victorian prison is operating at 163% of its normal capacity, according to the Howard League for Penal Reform. That compares with a national average of 107%, with Wandsworth housing 1,457 inmates despite certified normal accommodation for only 894.

A 2024 report from Wandsworth’s Independent Monitoring Board described conditions at the prison as “inhumane” and warned about serious risks created by overcrowding. Two men were routinely placed together in cells designed for a single occupant.

Some cells were described as “cramped, squalid and featuring broken or missing windows, furniture and fittings.” Inmates also sometimes waited two or three weeks before receiving a complete change of clothing.

Showers were described as damp, unhygienic and too limited in number for the population. Poor ventilation also meant mold returned even after areas had been refurbished.

Crumbling floors allowed vermin to enter, while boilers malfunctioned so frequently that heating became intermittent. During the summer, temperatures inside cells frequently climbed above 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Prisoners were often confined to their cells for as many as 22 hours each day. Staff shortages sometimes prevented inmates from receiving even basic opportunities for outdoor exercise.

Violence was another major concern during the 2023 to 2024 reporting period. Wandsworth recorded 442 assaults between inmates and another 518 assaults on members of staff.

The prison also documented 998 incidents of self harm involving 302 men during that period. There were 10 deaths, six of which were described in the report as “apparently self-inflicted.”

More than half of surveyed inmates said illicit drugs were easy to obtain. The odor of cannabis was described as pervasive throughout the facility, adding another stark detail to the watchdog’s account of daily conditions.

Authorities logged 344 drug finds and 115 alcohol discoveries during the reporting period. Security procedures also extend to anyone who visits an inmate, including children.

Wandsworth permits no more than three visitors for each inmate at one time. People visiting for the first time must provide fingerprints for the security system, while everyone entering, including Brand’s young son, born in 2023, must undergo a “rub-down search.”

Security dogs are stationed at the prison, and visitors may be searched by passive drug detection teams. Brand’s family would be subject to those measures if they choose to visit him behind bars.

The prison also maintains a strict dress code that can result in visitors being refused entry. Vests, low cut tops, high cut shorts or dresses, and ripped jeans are barred, along with clothing displaying offensive patterns or slogans.

Scarves, gloves, watches, sunglasses and hats must be removed before entry, except for religious head coverings. Despite the harsh conditions, the prison offers inmates educational programs, vocational instruction and activities.

Available courses cover English, math, computer skills, barbering, catering, bicycle repair, gardening, construction and radio production. Inmates can also participate in yoga, mindfulness, parenting skills, embroidery and choir.

Brand can maintain contact with his family through video calls, phone calls, and emails. Monthly family days offer inmates additional time with their children in a more relaxed environment, while a homework club allows fathers to assist with schoolwork.

Brand was charged in 2025 after a nearly two year investigation launched when several women publicly made allegations. The charges included one count of rape, one count of oral rape, two counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault.

He pleaded not guilty and denied the allegations throughout his trial. After Thursday’s convictions, attorney and Sahota & Sahota Solicitors director Kally Sahota exclusively told Page Six that he expects Brand to receive “eight or nine years.”
