Democrats are turning their attention toward Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency after their sweeping midterm victories, with lawmakers discussing investigations into the billionaire and his former role in the Trump administration.

Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker both said DOGE deserves congressional scrutiny. Yet Pritzker drew a notable distinction between examining the department’s conduct and making Musk himself the central target.

Raskin told Fox News Digital that he did not have a specific investigative blueprint. Still, he predicted that at least one congressional committee would examine DOGE and delivered a blistering assessment of its record.

“I had no specific plan,” Raskin said about possible investigations. “Look…DOGE was a catastrophe for America, and at least one committee, I feel pretty certain, will investigate it. It needs to investigate it.”

Musk has emerged as a potential target for Democratic oversight as some lawmakers call for closer examination of his leadership of DOGE. Those demands arrive as Democrats rally around investigations into alleged corruption under the Trump administration following their midterm success.

The tech CEO helped launch DOGE at the beginning of President Donald Trump’s second term. The department was intended to identify government waste and increase transparency surrounding federal spending.

DOGE’s efforts included deferred resignations and employee buyouts across federal agencies. The initiatives also contributed to a major reduction in the federal workforce, which contracted by about 250,000 employees during 2025, according to the Government Accountability Office.

Concerns about DOGE allegedly gaining access to Americans’ sensitive information have also fueled Democratic calls for investigations. Raskin argued that the department’s premise was false and that private information had been put at risk.

“I mean the whole thing was premised on a lie, and our private information was completely compromised by it,” Raskin said.

Pritzker said he had never “heard anything like that” regarding a possible investigation focused on Musk and DOGE. Even so, the Illinois governor agreed that the department’s actions merited a serious review.

“I think there should be a lot of inspection of what DOGE did,” Pritzker told Fox News Digital. “I think that was pretty awful.”

But Pritzker appeared less convinced that examining DOGE required investigators to concentrate specifically on Musk. When asked about targeting the billionaire, the governor responded, “I don't know about focusing on one person.”

Democratic lawmakers have also suggested examining the federal government’s contracts with Musk’s companies, which are worth billions of dollars. More recently, lawmakers have raised questions about his role in cutting internet access to the Ukrainian military.

The debate over Musk comes as Democrats prepare to use their newly strengthened position in Congress. Following the sweeping blue wave in the midterm elections, Democrats in both chambers have promised aggressive use of investigative committees and subpoena authority.

Those plans extend beyond Musk and DOGE. Democrats have vowed to investigate Trump and much of his administration, while some have also discussed efforts to impeach the president.

Raskin’s comments show that DOGE is firmly within Democrats’ sights, even without a specific investigative plan publicly established. Pritzker, meanwhile, supports inspecting the department’s conduct but remains wary of building the effort around a single individual.
