Cracker Barrel, the highway's culinary sentinel, offers a nostalgic vibe and the allure of comfort food.
Its rocking chair-studded porches and old country store aesthetic whisk travelers back to simpler times, a welcome respite for many on long journeys. Yet, beneath the warmth of country tunes and checkered tablecloths lies a menu filled with landmines for the health-conscious traveler.
Here's a look at five of the most treacherous dishes Cracker Barrel serves up.
1. Fresh Fruit N' Yogurt Parfait Breakfast: A Sweet Deception

A classic combination of yogurt and fruit brings forth images of light, refreshing, and healthful breakfasts. However, this seemingly wholesome choice might just be leading you down a saccharine path. With a whopping 65 grams of carbs and an even more astounding 41 grams of sugar, this menu item is a carbohydrate minefield. As one nutritionist aptly put it, "It’s essentially dessert masquerading as breakfast." While it may have only 510 calories, those seeking a genuinely light and nutritious start to their day should tread cautiously.
2. Fried Chicken Salad: A Heavy "Light" Option

The inherent irony of this dish is palpable. Salad, the beacon of healthful dining, meets its nemesis in fried chicken. With 870 calories, 1860 milligrams of sodium, and 53 grams of carbs, it challenges even the hungriest of travelers. As if these stats weren't formidable enough, the Honey French Dressing amplifies the salad's caloric heft by 350 and its sodium content by 580 milligrams. One might rightly wonder if opting for a burger would have been the wiser, more straightforward indulgence.
3. Maple Jam N' Bacon Burger: Sugar-coated Sinfulness

Sometimes indulgence knows no bounds, as is the case with this saccharine-infused burger. Apart from its 950-calorie label, its 21 grams of sugar could make anyone's head spin. To further tip the scales, if you dare to accompany it with fries and slaw, expect an avalanche of another 490 calories. Such a splurge might have one re-evaluating their decision to skip the salad.
4. Country-Fried Shrimp: Sodium Surprise

As a seafood offering, one might expect a lighter fare, but the country-fried shrimp is a dish laden with stealthy sodium. A single serving of just the shrimp and hush puppies means ingesting 2570 milligrams of sodium, overshooting the daily recommended amount. Adding the optional sides elevates the dish to a colossal 1,250 calories. Those with blood pressure concerns may wish to give this a wide berth.
5. Double Chocolate Fudge Coca-Cola Cake: Decadence Overload

Capping off a hearty meal with dessert can be the cherry on top. Still, when that dessert is a calorie-laden, sugar-packed spectacle, it's worth a second thought. This cake delivers an astonishing 96 grams of sugar and 790 calories per serving. Diners might consider sharing or saving it for another day.
Cracker Barrel is emblematic of indulgent southern comfort food. It offers a tantalizing array of dishes that can be a treat for the palate but may not be as kind to the waistline or heart health.
Knowledge is power; being informed allows one to make healthier decisions or at least be mindful of indulgences. After all, enjoying food is one of life's great pleasures, but so is feeling good afterward.

Thanks! But no thanks. I’m tired of people telling me what I should be aware of, what I should eat, and what I shouldn’t eat. I’m an adult. I can decide those things on my own. I don’t need a breakdown of all their food. I think that there’s a bunch of liberals going After Cracker Barrel to try and shut them down, because they feel the need to try to control something. They go after your food, straws, the type of bags you use at the grocery store, smoke from your barbecue grill going across and someone else’s yard, trying to force you to drive an electric car, and trying to force you to take some type of Jab that you don’t want. I’m sick of you people.
Some people like foods like this – it is their (and your) choice to eat or not eat them. America is about freedom to choose.
I so rarely go out to eat that when I do, I’m looking for pleasure. =^..^=
