Nick Pierzchalski spent years serving his country as an Army National Guard flying wounded soldiers to safety. While he was able to save many lives, the difficult job took a major toll on Nick emotionally.

One day, a stray puppy ran up to Nick in Iraq and befriended him. The friendship with this dog meant the world to Nick, and he named the puppy Airys. He soon realized that Airys had no family, and she grew to depend on Nick to take care of her. He started to depend on her as well to lift his spirits in an incredibly dark situation.

Nick went so far as to build Airys a kennel in the hangar, and the two were totally inseparable.

When Nick's tour of duty finally ended and it came time for him to return to Florida, he was devastated to leave Airys behind. He made it his mission to somehow get Airys out of Iraq so that she could come to live with him in America.

Nick teamed up with SPCA International to make this happen, and they were finally able to do it! When it came time for Nick to reunite with Airys, he was nervous that the dog would not remember him. The local news arrived to broadcast the reunion on live television, making Nick even more afraid that Airys had forgotten him. Finally, Nick opened her cage, and the dog's reaction made Nick speechless.
