When Tara Wood was shopping with her four-year-old daughter Norah, she couldn't believe it when her daughter called a senior man "old." Although her daughter didn't mean to hurt the man's feelings, Tara was worried that her daughter's words could have been hurtful.
Norah actually really likes old people. "I like old peoples the best 'cos they walk slow like I walk slow and they has soft skin like I has soft skin. They all gonna die soon so I'm gonna love 'em all up before they is died," says Norah. Tara couldn't help but love her daughter for her big heart, but felt ashamed from her daughter's comment.
However, the reaction of the widower who was the target of Norah's comment was nothing but joy. Norah shouted at the man, "Hi old person! It's my birfday today!" The gentleman didn't react much to Norah, but he didn't seem to concerned about being called old either.

Tara says she wanted to apologize to the man for her daughter's rudeness, but didn't want to suppress her daughter's creative expression. Instead of being grouchy about being called old, the gentleman's reply stunned Tara. "Well hello little lady! And how old are you today?" was his reply.
Tara says she was thrilled that the man wasn't offended, and instead seemed to enjoy the attention. Tara says that he and Norah chatted for a few minutes and he wished her happy birthday then went their separate ways. Norah's encounter with the man was far from over though.

A few aisles over, the mother and daughter caught up with the gentleman again, and Tara approached him and asked him to take a photo with Norah for her birthday. The gentleman explained that his wife had recently died and he was shocked to be shown so much kindness. He quickly agreed to the photo.

Norah placed her little hand on top of his big, soft hand and the gentleman stared at the little girl with twinkling eyes. Norah just studied his weathered knuckles and skinny veins. The tender-hearted little girl kissed the top of his hand and then placed it on her cheek. The "old" man beamed with joy.

Tara asked the gentleman his name to which he replied, "Dan." They had so much fun talking to Dan in the grocery store and before they parted Dan even told Norah how happy he was to have gotten to meet her on her birthday.
The unlikely new friends hugged again and Dan walked away. Norah watched him until she could no longer see Dan. Tara posted about the encounter on social media and someone told her that they knew Dan. Tara got Dan's phone number and surprised her daughter with a playdate with Dan.

The grocery store encounter led to multiple playdates with Dan and he and Norah became unlikely best friends. Check out the amazing pictures of their playdates below and be sure to watch the video of their friendship at the end. What an amazing tale of love and friendship between an "old" man and a kind-hearted little girl.
