A spirited and, at times, combative exchange unfolded Thursday night on Piers Morgan Uncensored as host Piers Morgan and former MSNBC anchor Joy Reid sparred over the reasons behind Reid’s February 2025 exit from the cable network.

Reid’s primetime program, The ReidOut, was axed earlier this year amid falling viewership, but she maintains the decision wasn’t just about ratings — it was about race.

“Joy, I mean, let’s be honest,” Morgan began.

“I don’t think you were fired after all those years because of your skin color or because you’re a Black woman. I think you were fired because your show just got increasingly unpopular.”

Morgan’s blunt assessment referred to The ReidOut’s declining viewership, which saw a steep drop of 28% from 1.3 million viewers in February 2024 to just 973,000 in February 2025.

The ratings slump came amid a broader shakeup at MSNBC. Reid, however, has pushed back, arguing that her program suffered smaller viewership losses compared to other shows on the network.

Despite the statistical downturn, Reid insisted that race played a role in her firing — a position Morgan sharply rejected during their heated interview.

When Morgan asked why she was "playing the race card" instead of acknowledging the impact of ratings, Reid was quick to turn the accusation back on him.

“I love the fact that your ‘play the race card’ is your version of the race card. You literally are so fixated on trying to racialize conversations with me, Piers, I actually find it quite charming,” Reid said before Morgan interrupted her.

“You racialize more conversations in your tenure at MSNBC than any host in history,” Morgan snapped as Reid continued to speak.

Throughout her time at MSNBC, Reid became known for offering commentary through a lens of race and identity, often aiming pointed criticism at Black conservatives.

She once referred to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as “Uncle Clarence” and labeled Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) the GOP’s “patina of diversity.”

In another instance, she described Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) as “the Black guy the Republicans love to roll out.”

Those comments, while applauded by some progressive viewers, sparked significant controversy and criticism from both conservative circles and some moderates.

During Thursday’s interview, Morgan seized on those moments as part of a broader critique of what he sees as Reid’s tendency to inject race into political commentary.

“You take an entire conversation I had with Marc Lamont Hill and pick the bits that you can racialize because this is your schtick,” Reid said, defending herself against Morgan’s accusations.

Morgan replied, “You racialize everything Joy, come on… It’s not my schtick, it was your schtick, but people got bored with it.”

Reid did not back down. She fired back at Morgan, accusing him of applying a double standard to discussions about race.

“You’re a White European,” she said.

“And you have a double standard when it comes to how people of color discuss race.”

Their contentious conversation extended beyond ratings and race. At one point, Morgan pressed Reid about her 2018 blog controversy, where homophobic posts from an old Florida-based blog she had contributed to resurfaced.

Reid initially denied writing the posts before later apologizing, stating that her past views did not reflect who she is today. Morgan’s rehashing of the incident seemed to add fuel to an already fiery conversation.

The interview underscored the stark ideological and cultural divide between the two media personalities. For Morgan, Reid’s departure from MSNBC was a result of dwindling audience interest, driven by what he characterized as an overreliance on racial commentary.

For Reid, her dismissal reflected deeper structural issues about race and representation in media — and the discomfort that some viewers, especially White ones, experience when Black voices speak boldly about systemic inequities.

What was clear by the end of the interview is that neither Morgan nor Reid was willing to concede ground.

Their combative dynamic highlighted not only their personal and professional differences but also the broader national debate over race, media bias, and the future of cable news.
