Nearly twelve years after Robin Williams passed away, his comedic brilliance continues to resonate with audiences around the world.

The actor’s unforgettable performances still bring laughter to fans who grew up watching his films.

One of Williams’ most cherished movies is the 1993 hit Mrs. Doubtfire, in which he starred opposite Sally Field.

During a recent appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Field shared what it was really like to work with Williams on the set.

Surprisingly, Field confessed that she was the only person on set who Williams could not make laugh.

This, she said, frustrated the late actor, who was known for his unmatched ability to send everyone around him into fits of laughter.

“It drove him mad, actually,” Field told Colbert. “Because I would never laugh, ever. And everybody else was laughing and carrying on.”

When Colbert asked if her professionalism kept her from laughing, Field pushed back with a cheeky grin. “It wasn’t funny,” she said, sending Colbert into laughter himself. “It just wasn’t funny.”

Despite Williams’ relentless efforts to crack her tough exterior, it was actually another co-star, Pierce Brosnan, who finally made Field laugh.

“Robin was always trying something different to make me laugh. It was so unfunny. I can’t begin to tell you,” she recalled. “And then Pierce — wonderful Pierce Brosnan — we were sitting at a table at the restaurant, and he made a fart noise on his arm. And I was gone. That was it.”

Williams was stunned when he saw what had happened. “That’s all it took?!” he asked her, astonished by the simple prank that succeeded where his endless improvisation had failed.

The dynamic between Field and Williams ended up mirroring their Mrs. Doubtfire characters perfectly. Williams played Daniel, a free-spirited father often seen as too playful to be taken seriously, while Field portrayed Miranda, his grounded and responsible wife.

Their opposing personalities ultimately lead to their separation in the film, with Daniel disguising himself as the eccentric nanny Mrs. Doubtfire to stay close to their children.

The film became one of the biggest box office hits of Williams’ career, earning $441 million worldwide. More than thirty years later, it remains a beloved classic, remembered for both its humor and heart.

Even though Williams failed to make her laugh during filming, Field revealed that the two shared a deep mutual affection off-camera.

In a 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, she shared a moving story about the compassion Williams showed her during one of her darkest moments on set.

“I never shared this story before,” Field said. She explained that during the filming of the divorce scene, she received a call informing her that her father had passed away from a massive stroke. “He asked if I wanted them to put him on the resuscitator. I said, ‘No, he did not want that. Just let him go. And please lean down and say, ‘Sally says goodbye.’”

Though grief-stricken, Field continued with the day’s shoot. “I was of course beside myself,” she said. “I came on the set trying with all my might to act. I wasn’t crying.” That was when Williams quietly pulled her aside to ask if she was all right.

When she told him about her father’s death, Williams immediately took action. “Oh my God, we need to get you out of here right now,” he told her. “And he made it happen — they shot around me the rest of the day,” Field revealed.

“I could go back to my house, call my brother and make arrangements. It’s a side of Robin that people rarely knew: He was very sensitive and intuitive.”

Field has continued to remember Williams fondly in the years since his passing. At an event in 2023, she said she wished he were “growing old” alongside her, underscoring the depth of their friendship and mutual respect.

Williams died tragically in 2014 at age 63 after unknowingly suffering from Lewy Body Dementia. His legacy as one of the greatest performers of his generation endures, and stories like Field’s continue to reveal the kindness and complexity behind his comedic genius.

Though Williams never broke her composure with his constant jokes, he touched Field’s heart through a simple act of compassion — one that remains a testament to the man behind the laughter.

There will never be another like Robin Williams, and his memory continues to bring both smiles and tears to those who knew and loved him.
