Ben Affleck may have years of life experience, but his three children are not convinced that qualifies him to dispense romantic wisdom. During a September 24th appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the actor described the ruthless response he receives whenever he tries to discuss dating and relationships at home.

According to People, Affleck, 54, said Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 14, have developed a familiar reaction to his advice. Instead of treating him like a relationship authority, they exchange knowing looks that immediately let him know what they are thinking.

Affleck said he sometimes catches his children glancing at one another as if to say, “Dad is saying this and that.” Their reactions have forced him to recognize that his status inside the family is not quite as cool or commanding as he once imagined.

The actor admitted that he has become “the caricature in this story.” With three children ready to evaluate his every observation, even an ordinary conversation about life can apparently become an opportunity for a sharp joke at his expense.

The latest round of teasing began during a family dinner conversation involving friends, relationship drama, and dating. Affleck believed his own experiences might allow him to offer a few useful lessons about the relationship being discussed.

As Us Weekly reported, Affleck started sharing his perspective on one of the relationships his children had brought up. His 17 year old quickly interrupted and delivered a devastating assessment of his qualifications.

The comeback was harsh, direct, and difficult to argue with, given how publicly Affleck’s romantic history has unfolded. Rather than objecting to the remark, however, he appeared to appreciate the humor behind it and willingly shared the exchange on television.

Affleck was married to Jennifer Garner from 2005 until their divorce was finalized in 2018. The former couple shares Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel, and they continue to parent their three children together.

Jennifer Lopez represents another highly recognizable chapter in Affleck’s dating history. Affleck and Lopez were first engaged during the early 2000s, but they ended that relationship in 2004 before eventually finding their way back to each other nearly two decades later.

After rekindling their romance, Affleck and Lopez became engaged again and married in 2022. Us Weekly reported that Lopez filed for divorce in 2024, and the divorce was finalized in 2025.

Affleck has also been linked to other prominent women, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Ana de Armas. Because so much of his romantic life has played out publicly, his children have plenty of familiar material available whenever he attempts to position himself as a dating adviser.

The relationship remark was not the only example Affleck offered of his children’s willingness to target him with a perfectly timed punchline. Another memorable joke arrived while the actor was visiting a bookstore with one of his children.

During the visit, Affleck noticed a book titled I’m Sorry for Everything. His child immediately spotted an opportunity and joked, “Oh look, Dad, it’s your autobiography.”

The line turned a simple bookstore visit into another reminder that Affleck’s children are always prepared to challenge him. Even so, he did not sound upset by the joke and instead expressed pride in the child’s comic instincts.

Affleck described the child as someone who “skirts the line.” That assessment suggested he recognized the precision behind the teasing, even when he was the one absorbing the blow.

At home, Affleck may have fame, experience, and plenty of stories, but none of those things guarantee that his children will accept his relationship advice without comment. Their cutting responses have instead transformed him into the family punchline whenever dating comes up.

For Affleck, the harsh reality appears to be that he is not receiving much respect as a romantic expert from Violet, Seraphina, or Samuel. Judging by his willingness to repeat their jokes publicly, he remains proud of their humor and prepared to take the hits.
