Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have spent years building a friendship filled with surprise visits, risky stunts, and spontaneous invitations.
While promoting their new show, “Brothers,” the actors shared stories that offered a colorful look at their unusually close bond, as reported by Fox News.
Their anecdotes range from uncertainty about when they first met to the possibility that they might share a biological connection.
Harrelson has also appeared inside McConaughey’s home without warning, occasionally turning a brief visit into a stay lasting several months.
During an appearance on the “Glass Half Full” podcast, McConaughey said Harrelson “has never gone through a front door in his life.” He explained that Harrelson does not necessarily call or send a message before visiting because “he just shows up.”
One especially startling visit happened while McConaughey was living in Los Angeles. After the friends had not seen each other for a year, McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, woke at 2 in the morning to discover Harrelson lying in bed between them.
According to McConaughey, Harrelson had jumped the fence, opened a window, entered the house, and climbed into bed.
When podcast host Craig Melvin observed that “people have been shot for less,” Harrelson replied, “Well, I was hoping he didn't have a gun.”

Harrelson described the stunt as an entertaining way to wake a friend. He also joked that being beside Alves was enjoyable, adding, “Like, that was nice. She was warm to me.”
The actors cannot even agree on the first time they met.
McConaughey said Harrelson believes they have known each other one year longer than McConaughey remembers, possibly because their early encounter involved taking shots beginning at 1 p.m.
Harrelson recalled already knowing of McConaughey and liking him from a distance.
When they met, Harrelson proposed a shot, while McConaughey initially protested that he had considerable work to complete that day.
McConaughey also described Harrelson’s appetite for physical risk. He claimed his friend once performed a handstand only 18 inches from the edge of the Grand Canyon, leaving a nearby photographer too alarmed to capture the moment.
Harrelson disputed parts of that account, saying he had been farther from the edge and that the location was not the Grand Canyon.
McConaughey nevertheless insisted the missed photograph would have been “the most epic shot.”
Harrelson’s spontaneity has also extended to complete strangers. On Conan O’Brien’s podcast, “Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend,” McConaughey recalled a Greek vacation during which Harrelson invited a honeymooning couple to stay at a rental house shared by the actors and their families.
Harrelson and his wife, Laura, had met the couple while collecting luggage at the airport.
When McConaughey arrived at the rental, he found the strangers sitting outside and learned that Harrelson had invited them to remain with the group for a week.
Speaking with People, McConaughey called Harrelson’s unannounced arrivals “one of Woody's great traits.”
He said a visit intended to last an hour could become three months, while Harrelson confirmed that he routinely makes himself comfortable at McConaughey’s home.
McConaughey sometimes asks for space during those extended stays, only to face resistance from his family.
His children enjoy the later nights, milkshakes, and laughter Harrelson brings into the house, making the unpredictable guest difficult to send away.
Their show, “Brothers,” places a fictional spin on another striking part of their friendship.
They portray versions of themselves who discover they could be brothers, reflecting a possibility the actors discussed after a family trip to Greece.
McConaughey said his mother told Harrelson, “Woody, I knew your dad,” while everyone was discussing the closeness between their families.
He explained that his parents had been divorced before his birth, leaving open the possibility that his mother and Harrelson’s father met during that period.
Harrelson later said the story was “filled with innuendo” and indicated that he would take a DNA test. McConaughey has been less willing, with Harrelson explaining that his friend feels as though “he is losing a father.”
