President Donald Trump delivered a blistering warning Thursday to Sen. John Cornyn of Texas and Republican strategist Karl Rove, accusing both men of making it harder for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to win his Senate race.

With Paxton facing Texas State Rep. James Talarico of the 50th District next month, Trump argued that Cornyn and Rove would deserve the blame if the Republican nominee loses. The race has tightened into a dead heat during its final stretch.

“Sadly, and very stupidly, John Cornyn, and his Liddle' Buddy, Super RINO, Karl Rove, are doing everything possible to make it hard for Ken Paxton, the Greatest Attorney General in the History of Texas, and one of the Best in the United States, to win the upcoming Midterm Election against a Radical Left Lunatic, James TalaFREAKO, who is the ANTITHESIS of Texas Values,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump also revisited the Republican primary, where Paxton defeated Cornyn by a wide margin after receiving the president’s endorsement. He accused Cornyn and Rove of refusing to accept the voters’ decision.

“John Cornyn who, after my Endorsement, lost the Primary to Ken by a very wide margin, and Karl Rove, who shouldn't be allowed to spew his jealousy on FoxNews, should be ashamed of themselves,” Trump continued. “They are hurting Texas and, more importantly, hurting the United States of America!”

Trump made clear that he views their conduct as more than ordinary intraparty disagreement. He portrayed both men as longtime political opponents whose behavior could help deliver a Senate victory to Talarico.

“If Ken Paxton loses, it will be because of WEAK and INEFFECTIVE Political Hacks like John Cornyn and Karl Rove, who have ineffectively opposed me for my entire political career,” Trump wrote.

The president then appealed directly to Cornyn’s primary supporters. Trump asked them to unite behind Paxton and immediately transfer their support to the Republican nominee.

Trump described himself as “your favorite President (ME!)” while making the appeal. He also warned that Texas “cannot take a chance on having a FREAKO” representing the state in Washington.

Cornyn has continued criticizing Paxton and taking shots at Trump since Paxton’s lopsided victory in the May runoff. According to The Texas Tribune, Cornyn has said he will not move money into Paxton’s campaign.

Rove has also repeatedly criticized Paxton. He once claimed the race “would be over” if Cornyn had captured the nomination, and he still has not said whether he will vote for Paxton or Talarico.

The bitterness became even clearer at a private fundraiser, where Paxton was caught on a hot mic discussing Cornyn’s alleged desire to see him lose. Paxton told supporters Cornyn wanted that outcome “to teach those Republicans a lesson.”

Cornyn’s camp denies that Cornyn ever made such a statement. Still, the refusal to provide campaign money has fueled criticism that Cornyn’s support for the Republican ticket amounts to little more than a political shrug.

That posture carries obvious consequences in a contest this close. Most polls show Talarico narrowly ahead, although the two most recent surveys tracked by RealClearPolitics present a more favorable picture for Paxton.

InsiderAdvantage has Paxton leading by one point. Quantus Insights shows the race tied, reinforcing Trump’s concern that Republican unity could determine the result.

The column’s author predicted that Paxton ultimately will win by about four points. That forecast comes despite polling that depicts a tight contest and despite the continued resistance from Cornyn and Rove.

Texas Republicans used the primary to choose their nominee, and Paxton won. Bruised egos may follow a bitter contest, but conservatives should not hope Talarico wins merely to teach their own party a lesson.

The 2026 midterms will determine the fate of Trump’s America First agenda, with Republicans seeking to maintain control of both chambers of Congress. In that environment, withholding support from the party’s chosen nominee could prove costly.
