A Georgia mayor’s decision to secretly place a GPS tracker on the police chief’s truck triggered a stunning collapse inside the small town’s police department. Chief Bunn and every full-time officer quit after the surveillance was disclosed.
All five full-time officers submitted resignations, and most of the reserve officers followed them out the door. City Manager Tausha Grose also stepped down as the turmoil spread through Milner’s local government.
The resignations took effect Wednesday, leaving the city without its police department. The Lamar County Sheriff’s Office was left to provide law enforcement coverage for the town after the sweeping departures.
Mayor Timmons confirmed that he purchased the tracking device with his own money and placed it on the vehicle driven by Bunn. The chief said the tracker was installed without his knowledge.

Bunn also told the city council that neither council members nor the city administrator knew about the device. He called the mayor’s conduct a violation of his rights.
The tracker was not the mayor’s only surveillance measure. Timmons told WSB-TV reporter Mark Winne that he also installed a camera at a car wash and pointed it toward City Hall.
According to Timmons, the property owner approved placement of the camera. The camera was directed at the building where the police chief’s office was located.
Winne confronted the mayor directly about the GPS device. He asked, “Did you place a tracking device on the police vehicle driven by the Milner police chief?”

The investigative reporter then questioned Timmons about the additional camera. Winne asked, “Did you put a video camera out back of the car wash pointed at the building where his office was?”
Timmons acknowledged that the camera had been aimed toward City Hall. “Yes, City Hall, yes sir, and with approval from the property owner,” Timmons said.
The mayor linked his concerns to the chief’s hours and timesheets. Timmons said his signature appears on those timesheets and that he believed there were problems involving the hours reported.
Timmons also offered a blunt description of how he viewed his responsibilities in office. “The mayor’s position is not just shaking hands and kissing babies.”

You know, like they do to us every day with taxpayer funded Flock/Axon/etc... cameras and AI powered software. As it turns out - the police don't like it (who could have predicted that!?) and they resigned Monitor the police accordingly... #rural #georgia #cops #milner #police #FAFO #education #gps #monitor — Mrgunsngear (@Mrgunsngear) October 31, 2026

The city council later censured Timmons over his handling of the concerns. Members determined that the mayor had failed to use the proper channels and methods before taking matters into his own hands.
Council members said Timmons should have brought his concerns to them first, as required under the city charter. Instead, the police chief learned that a tracking device had been placed on his vehicle without his knowledge.
The fallout went well beyond Bunn’s own resignation. Officers cited a lack of trust, concerns about the mayor’s judgment and decision-making, and ethical problems in the letters announcing their departures.
Captain Craig Walton went further by calling for an independent investigation into the mayor’s conduct. His request came as the police department’s officers abandoned their posts in response to the surveillance disclosure.
Lamar County Sheriff Brad White said his deputies would continue answering calls in Milner, just as they always had. That coverage now carries added importance because the city’s own department is absent.
White also explained what would happen if Milner remains without a police department for an extended period. The city would have to contract with the sheriff’s office for police services.
Even after the entire full-time force quit, Timmons said potential replacements were already reaching out. According to the mayor, he had received unsolicited resumes for police positions and for the vacant city manager job.
For now, the sheriff’s office is handling calls while Milner confronts the consequences of the mayor’s actions. The council’s censure, the demand for an independent investigation, and the mass resignations have left the city seeking both police personnel and a city manager.
