Far left activists rushed into Seattle for an emergency protest Thursday after Washington state voters approved a measure barring biological males from competing in girls’ school sports. The statewide result came despite Republicans suffering significant losses during Tuesday’s midterm elections.
The measure won 56.5% of the vote, delivering a clear verdict on an issue that drew support beyond traditional party lines. The outcome highlighted bipartisan backing for separating school sports according to biological sex rather than gender identity.
Under the measure, students in elementary, middle, and high school must compete according to their biological sex. The requirement applies instead of allowing athletic participation based on what the measure describes as gender identity.
Students also must submit a signed statement from a healthcare provider verifying their biological sex. That requirement adds a formal verification process for students seeking to participate in school athletics covered by the measure.

Let’s Go Washington, the conservative group behind the initiative, celebrated the result on election night. The organization framed the vote as a long awaited victory for girls who had seen their concerns dismissed by the state’s majority party.
“This is a victory for girls... who have been told time and again by the majority party that their voices and opportunities don’t matter. [...] Tonight, those girls see that well over a million Washingtonians stand with them and care that their sports are safe and fair,” the group said.
The celebration was quickly followed by outrage from far left activists and activists who identify as transgender across the Pacific Northwest. Demonstrators gathered Thursday night at Seattle’s Westlake Park to oppose the measure approved by voters.
Gender Equity Movement organized the protest, according to KUOW. Evan Gortner of the advocacy group called the measure “the most extreme anti-trans ban on school sports in the country.”

Gortner also pointed to Washington’s liberal political reputation while expressing disappointment over the result. The defeat appeared particularly painful for activists accustomed to seeing the state move their way on major social questions.
“It was a big loss in a state like Washington that has been consistently very liberal and consistently ahead of the curve on especially social issues,” Gortner said. “It’s very sad to see.”
Seattle (Nov. 5) — Trans and far-left radicals held an emergency protest to rage over Washington state voters overwhelmingly passing a measure that would keep female school sports female.
Even though Republicans were defeated at the ballot box across the country, in almost all states where trans radicalism was challenged, voters passed common sense measures—even in very liberal states. — Andy Ngo (@MrAndyNgo) November 6, 2026
The result stood out because it arrived during an election in which Republicans suffered significant losses across Washington. Even in that political environment, a majority of voters backed restrictions on biological males competing in girls’ sports.
That contrast was central to the significance of the vote. The measure’s passage showed that support extended beyond Republican voters, with the issue attracting enough bipartisan backing to secure 56.5% statewide.

Washington is now part of a broader collection of states restricting biological males who identify as female from entering girls’ and women’s sports. More than 25 states across the United States have adopted similar prohibitions.
Arizona and Nebraska are among the states where voters most recently approved comparable ballot measures. Washington’s decision therefore represents the latest voter approved action in a state level push over eligibility rules for female athletics.
The ballot box did not end the dispute. Lawyers with the ACLU of Washington have indicated that they will challenge the measure, setting up another front after activists failed to stop it from winning voter approval.
For supporters, the result was about keeping girls’ sports safe and fair. For opponents gathered in Seattle, it was an emergency worthy of a protest after Washington voters rejected their position.
