President Donald Trump announced early Wednesday that “massive” oil, gas, and mineral exploration is preparing to begin across Greenland. His triumphant Truth Social message presented the Arctic island as a major opportunity for natural resources and a vital location for American and European security.
Trump did not identify the specific exploration projects that are ready to proceed in the Danish territory. He nevertheless made clear that the green light has been given for a sweeping new phase of activity across Greenland.
“Massive Oil, Gas, and Mineral Exploration is getting ready to begin in our new and beautiful Greenland!” Trump wrote. The declaration gave his familiar energy message a decidedly Arctic setting.
Trump added that “the amount of easily available Oil is far greater than that of almost… anywhere in the World.” His post placed oil alongside gas and minerals as resources ready for extensive exploration.

The president also focused heavily on Greenland’s strategic position. Greenland “from a Security Purpose in the Defense and Offense of both the United States of America, and Europe, is second to none,” Trump said in his post.
Trump said any future attack against the United States would have to cross the Arctic island. He described Greenland as the location “where our Defense will routinely knock down drones, missiles, or any other form of weapon not yet even conceived.”
The exploration announcement follows an agreement signed last month by the United States, Denmark and Greenland. That deal came after Trump repeatedly pressed for increased security on the island, despite initial resistance from many European allies.
Trump has emphasized Greenland’s importance to Arctic security since his first term. The matter remained one of his priorities after he returned to the White House in 2025.

Beyond oil and gas, Greenland holds untapped rare earth deposits that could give the island a critical role. Its significance could also increase as melting polar ice opens new shipping routes through the region.
The agreement runs 10 pages and expands the role of the United States military in Greenland. It also clears a path for two new military bases and Trump’s “Golden Dome” missile defence system.
Those new installations are to be established in Narsarsuaq, located in the south of Greenland, and Mestersvig in the east. Their placement would expand the American military presence into additional areas of the island.
The United States already operates the Pituffik base in northern Greenland. Under the agreement, that existing base would be joined by the planned installations in the south and east.
The deal also reaffirms Danish sovereignty over Greenland. In addition, it recognizes the right of Greenlanders to self-determination while broadening the American military role outlined in the agreement.
Trump’s description of “our new and beautiful Greenland” brought his characteristic bravado to the announcement. At the same time, the formal agreement maintains Danish sovereignty and explicitly preserves the rights of Greenland’s population.
The president’s post tied resource development and national security together in one sweeping Arctic vision. Oil, gas and mineral exploration would move forward as the United States also prepares to increase its military footprint under the agreement.
For Trump, Greenland is not merely a remote island with valuable deposits waiting beneath its surface. His announcement cast it as a central security position where American systems could confront drones, missiles, and future weapons before they reached the United States.
The planned bases, the Golden Dome system and the push for exploration collectively place Greenland near the center of Trump’s Arctic priorities. After resistance from European allies, the agreement now provides a framework for broader military activity while the president celebrates the island’s resource potential.
