In some areas of the United States, it's not uncommon to see a herd of deer roaming through residential neighborhoods.

So was the case for one New Jersey man who saw, in his backyard, what appeared to be a normal deer at first glimpse.

The animal had long slender legs, a brown furry body, and a white tail. What set this deer apart was his head.

His head appeared to be covered with some sort of shiny, hard helmet or fishbowl. The deer was also alone, which is unique because deer tend to run in at least pairs.

The man decided he needed to get a closer look at the animal so he slowly approached the deer.

Inside the helmet was a young, scared buck who was obviously in a lot of trouble. It turns out the helmet was actually the globe from a light fixture. It had likely been filled with water and the deer had put his head inside to get a drink and then couldn't get it off.

Because of the light fixture being attached to his head, the deer had possibly been ostracized by his family. Many wild species will abandoned an animal if they look different, are injured, or are sick because they don't want to draw the attention of predators.

The homeowner, realizing the danger that the deer was in, contacted Monmouth County SPCA and the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife.

Rescuers immediately headed out to help free the deer. After making it safe to approach the deer, they were able to remove the light fixture from his head. It was obvious that the deer had been without food and water for several days.

When the tranquilizers wore off, with the light fixture removed, the deer was able to get up and walk away from the people that had helped him. His battle, however, wasn't over yet.

The homeowner realized that a few days had passed and the deer was still wondering around in the same area. He hadn't left to go find his family or get food and water. The deer finally laid down on the ground and appeared to be struggling to breath. The homeowner called in help yet again.

The rescuers quickly administered fluids to the dehydrated animal and within just a few minutes his breathing returned to normal.

The fluid must have been exactly what he needed because when workers were done, the deer took a few steps, hopped over a fence, and pranced away into the woods.

We're delighted that this deer's story had a happy ending and kudos to the homeowner for finding help for this distressed animal!
