A public back-and-forth unfolded as 2026 began between President Donald Trump and Hollywood actor George Clooney, following reports that Clooney and his family have obtained French citizenship and plan to raise their children abroad, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

As first reported by The Gateway Pundit, Clooney and his wife, Amal Alamuddin Clooney, were granted French citizenship through a naturalization decree.

The couple’s 8-year-old twins, Ella and Alexander, were included in the process. Clooney has previously said the decision to raise their children in France was influenced in part by the country’s privacy laws.

The news prompted a sharp response from President Trump on New Year’s Eve, when he addressed the development in a lengthy post on Truth Social.

Trump criticized Clooney’s political record, mocked his film career, and tied the move to broader concerns about immigration and crime in France.

“Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France, which is, sadly, in the midst of a major crime problem because of their absolutely horrendous handling of immigration, much like we had under Sleepy Joe Biden,” Trump wrote.

Trump also referenced Clooney’s political activity during the 2024 election cycle.

“Remember when Clooney, after the now infamous debate, dumped Joe during a fundraiser, only to go onto the side of another stellar candidate, Jamala(K!), who is now fighting it out with the worst governor in the Country, including Tim Waltz, Gavin Newscum, for who is going to lead the Democrats to their future defeat,” the president added.

Trump continued by dismissing Clooney’s acting career.

“Clooney got more publicity for politics than he did for his very few, and totally mediocre, movies. He wasn’t a movie star at all, he was just an average guy who complained, constantly, about common sense in politics,” Trump wrote.

Clooney responded publicly on Thursday with a short statement that drew attention for its brevity and phrasing. The comment was obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.

“I totally agree with the current president,” Clooney said. “We have to make America great again.”

He added, “We’ll start in November.”

The response did not directly address Trump’s criticisms regarding Clooney’s move to France, his comments about crime and immigration, or the president’s assessment of Clooney’s political judgment.

Clooney also did not clarify what he meant by referencing November or how the statement squares with his decision to obtain citizenship in another country.

Clooney has been politically active for years and has aligned himself with Democratic candidates and causes. His move overseas has drawn scrutiny from critics who argue that wealthy celebrities often lecture Americans about national issues while choosing to live elsewhere.

Neither Clooney nor his representatives have commented further on the exchange. The White House has not issued an additional statement beyond Trump’s Truth Social post.

The episode adds to ongoing tensions between President Trump and high-profile figures in Hollywood, many of whom have been outspoken critics of his administration while maintaining significant personal wealth and international lifestyles.
